Hong Kong Woman loses USDT Worth $451,480 To Gang Robbers

In a recent case of cryptocurrency theft, currently handled by detectives from the Kwun Tong criminal investigation unit, a woman has recently lost USDT worth about US$448,700 to a gang of thieves at knifepoint in Hong Kong.

According to a Tuesday report, the woman is a cryptocurrency trader and had met one of the robbers who posed as a buyer. She had earlier sold digital currencies to the supposed buyer on two different occasions.

The first and second transactions had been conducted successfully. However, this last transaction, involving USDT tokens, was not as successful as the first two, as the gang member must have conducted the first two to gain the victim’s trust.

On Monday afternoon, she got to the location where the deal will take place, an office at the Ricky Centre on Chong Yip Street in Kwun Tong, a short-term leased out space with several furniture items, according to the police force, for her appointment with the supposed buyer.

Once it was time for the trade, around 2.30 pm, the unsuspecting victim used her iPhone to sell USDT tokens to the buyer and collected the sum of HK$3.5 million in cash as payment.

However, not quite long after she completed the transaction, three men armed with either a knife or a rod rushed out from a nearby room and seized the money from the trader, together with her iPhone.

The police source also revealed that the culprits had locked the woman in the office, uninjured, and fled with the money in addition to the transferred USDT tokens.

A nearby eyewitness, an uncle to the victim, who had earlier dropped her off at the location, mentioned that he saw four men, most likely the thieves, run out of the building and drive off in a delivery van right before the arrival of the Police.

The Police were alerted to the robbery by the victim’s husband, who she contacted with her second phone. On the arrival of the Police, they rescued the woman and mounted a search for the thieves but the suspects are yet to be found.

This incident is not the first case of cryptocurrency theft, as Coinfomania reported earlier last week of a 37-year-old Chinese trader who lost about 15 bitcoin worth $387,000 to a gang of robbers disguised as potential buyers.
